Indoor holiday fun for the whole family

09 December 2020

Christmas is coming! And, though many of us still aren’t quite sure what month it is, that means the holidays are too. It’s a special time of year when almost everyone has time off – so it’s a perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with your family.

Hanging out with the whole family is great – but, inevitably, at some point you’ll hear that dreaded statement: ‘I’m bored!’

Technology is an endless source of entertainment and so it’s easy to fall into the trap of screen-related activities during holidays. Of course, sometimes you just need to turn on Peppa Pig for a few minutes of peace – we get it. But it’s also a unique opportunity to try something new.

And while some of us may be lucky enough to go for typical holiday expeditions, like the zoo or the beach, many of us might not have those options available.

So whether you’ve got rain, hail, shine or snow outside your window these holidays, here are some ideas for screen-free activities that can be enjoyed together at home.

Grab a wooden spoon

Cooking is usually a chore that we squeeze in between work and soccer practice and study, but the holidays are a great opportunity to bring a little bit of excitement back into the kitchen.

Perhaps you could create something you’ve never made from scratch before or make a recipe that is a little more complicated or time-consuming – both are great excuses to get the whole family involved.

If you’ve got dessert enthusiasts in your house, you could even have a bake-off. The kitchen might be a mess afterwards, but the end result is lots of sweet treats – that’s a win!

Puzzle it out

You know what they say: those who do jigsaw puzzles together, stay together*.

Whether you’re doing the same 45-piece puzzle again and again with a little one or tackling a 2000-piece masterpiece, jigsaws will guarantee hours of entertainment.

If you want to get in the festive spirit, you can have some fun in Santa’s workshop with Junior Jigsaw: Elf Mischief or lose yourself in a Winter Wonderland 1000-piece Jigsaw.

Story time

Is there any family activity more wholesome than reading together?!

Recreate the childhood joy of story time by gathering your household together for a designated period of time. Try and choose a book that everyone enjoys; it can be anything from a picture book to a novel. Take turns reading aloud and enjoy getting lost in the story.

Funny voices, sound effects and dramatic pauses are strongly encouraged.
