Interview with an illustrator – Lizzy Dee

26 May 2017

Lizzy Dee is a designer, illustrator, and author from New Jersey. She is the creator and owner of Lizzy Dee Studio where she uses her children’s publishing experience and her love for all things smiley to design books, craft kits, and paper goods. Her design mind gives an edge in the illustration market where she loves creating cute characters, patterns for apparel & decor, and illustrations for licensing! Lizzy is also an avid collector of oddities & antiques, a WFMU fanatic, and you'll never see her without tea in hand.

Lizzy has worked on a number of projects for us, including Sticky Note Art and Colour Together: Mummy and Me, along with some exciting projects that are still in the development stage.

What made you decide to become a designer/illustrator?
My parents spent way too much money on art supplies for me when I was growing up so I had to make it worth it for them! Just kidding, but they let me take lots of classes and experiment freely from a very young age. What parents let their 10 year old cover their room in an underwater mural scene?! I'm a lucky duck.

I knew I wanted to pursue design in college because I've always had a deep admiration of books and technical aspect of making them. I did not know I would also be illustrating them one day!

Where do you find your inspiration?
I find my inspiration in many ways, but I try to let my day influence me the most. When I draw the silly moments that happen throughout the day I find people relate to and enjoy them more. I also LOVE antique books and ephemera. I gather a lot of reference from woodblock prints and etchings from hundreds of years ago.

You’ve worked on a few different Hinkler projects now; do you have a favourite?
That's such a hard question to answer!!! I've truly enjoyed each project but I think I had the most fun with Dream, Create, Inspire! (Part of Colour This Journal Series 3, out September 2017)

If you weren’t a designer/illustrator, what would you like to be?
OOOoooo, so many choices. I would either be working in some type of agriculture or with animals! Marine biology has always interested me, and who doesn't want to swim with whales?!

What do you like to do when you’re not creating adorable illustrations and designs?
I'm a workaholic so I'm either designing or illustrating for the majority of my day. I wake up every morning SO excited to start the day's work. But I guess when I'm not drawing I'm either playing with my cat or dancing to Queen!

What’s your favourite quote?
"Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine." by Anthony J. D'Angelo
