Our Guide to the Most Horrifying Halloween Hang-out Ever!

30 October 2018

It was the night before Halloween when Sarah entered the living room.
‘Mum,’ she said, ‘What decorations are we going to use for my party tomorrow night?’
Mum looked up from her book. ‘What party?’
‘The party you said that I could have for Halloween!’
Mum stared at Sarah. She had completely forgotten.
‘How many of your friends are coming?’ Mum eventually asked.

If you’re a parent, this really is the stuff of nightmares! Don’t panic, though. If you’ve committed to hosting a Halloween party for your kids, but you’re not quite sure how to make it the best spook-fest in town, we’ve got you covered!

So, what is Halloween about? Well, the tradition of Halloween originated from an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the world of the living and the dead became blurred, so people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off spirits. Today, Halloween is a fun, freaky holiday on which people decorate their houses, dress in costume and eat lots of treats!

One of the most important parts of any Halloween party is decoration. There are heaps of ways you can decorate the space for your party. Think fake cobwebs, hanging sheets with eye-holes for ghosts, or even a carved jack-o-lantern! If a jack-o-lantern is a bit too complicated for you, have a look at these origami Halloween lights from Handmade Charlotte! They are quick and easy to make and add the perfect Halloween-y touch to your party.

No Halloween party would be complete without sharing spooky stories! Below are our tips on delivering the most terrifying tales ever! You could use the tips yourself or share them with the kids to tell their own hair-raising horror stories! So, grab a torch, turn down the lights and get scaring!

1) Set your story somewhere similar to the location of your party. This gives your story immediacy and makes it heaps scarier!
For example: Timmy sat alone one night in a dark living room, much like this one, when he heard a scratching noise coming from the kitchen.

2) Claim that the story you’re telling is true (even if it isn’t!). Say that it happened to a friend of your cousin’s, or your great-Aunt’s dog. This will make your story feel even more real.

For example: This happened to a friend of my cousin, who goes to school a few towns away…

3) A great story is all in the delivery. Read quietly, filling your voice with dread, then make your voice louder as the danger increases in your tale. Drag out the final sentence, letting the scariness hang in the air for maximum impact.

For example: But then she lets out a scream of terror: embedded in the front passenger door… is a hook!
