Spotlight on an artist: Cristina Ciovarta

06 September 2021

A lot of people work very hard behind the scenes to help us create all kinds of exciting and beautiful products, so we thought we’d take some time to shine a spotlight on one.

Introducing our artist of the moment: Cristina Ciovarta!

Cristina is the creative mastermind behind our beautiful Create Your Own Paper Flowers kit. We reached out to her to discover a bit more about herself and the stunning craft of paper flowers.

Tell us about yourself.

I live in a small mountain town in Romania, surrounded by nature, trees and fresh air. I've always been in love with art, nature, flowers and colours. I studied painting in high school and majored in fashion design. I worked in this field for a few years until I discovered paper flowers. Fashion was my first love but it’s through paper flowers that I express myself as an artist.

How did you start making paper flowers?

In 2012, I discovered the world of paper flowers while browsing Pinterest. I felt an instant connection with the art form and started documenting and developing my own techniques. After a year, I left my job as a fashion designer and started making paper flowers full time.

Since launching my paper-flower brand and business, I’ve made hundreds of flowers for people, developing new techniques and designs for paper flowers and greenery.

For me, the most difficult thing is making small flowers like lilac or lily of the valley – the tiny details are very hard to master. But I see this as a challenge and a chance to improve!

What is your favourite piece that you’ve made?
I love all my flowers but one of my recent favourites are the fritillaria tulips. I find them so cute and I love to paint that pattern.

What inspires you?
Nature and real flowers. I've saved hundreds of photos and bought a lot of books. Also, the work of many paper flower artists and creators offers so much inspiration and wisdom. It's such an amazing community and I'm happy to be a part of it.
